Moving the Site, and Off to Boston...
21 August 2008

I'm trying out WordPress.com and moving my blog over to that site. Why? Well, two reasons. First is that I'd like to get back to more frequent posts, and to do so given the traveling I need a more mobile aware platform, and something easier to upload photos in. Second, I can just feel my server downstairs getting ready to die and I don't want to purchase a new one quite yet (gots other stuff in the house to pay for.)

For now the new site can be found at mammothboarder.wordpress.com. I'll be repointing the domain as soon as I get more stuff moved over. But I'll likely not be updating this site in the meantime.

So I'm slowly moving over past posts, etc. The one thing I don't like in WordPress is that it's totally blog-oriented, which is great but means that organizing longer static pages like bios, resumes, essays, etc. is, well, difficult. I'm also trying to figure out how to add links off site in some kind of organized list.

The ski report will still be served from the house, linked from the new blog site. But I've got a couple of months to set that sucker up.

I think I actually like TypePad better, but it's a paid site. I don't mind since I'll point my domain and such and WordPress charges for that. But TypePad changes for bandwidth - and who the hell can estimate bandwidth on a small site? Who the heck wants to worry about that? So for now it's WordPress (who also offers tools to export the site and move it if needed.) I tried to use Facebook as a blog, but it's really limited and, of course, one has to be a member to read it.

Speaking of travel, I'm off to San Diego tomorrow morning, and then to Boston on Saturday morning for a week on the east coast. I'm taggin' along with Mickey to various family residences, and may see Adam (also known as "the boy") during Labor Day weekend. More from the road and the iPhone.

The Choice on Energy
5 August 2008

"So to sum up, under Senator McCain's plan, the oil companies get billions more, we don't pay any less at the pump, and we stay in the same cycle of dependence on oil that got us into this crisis," read prepared remarks released by the Obama campaign. "The oil companies have placed their bet on Senator McCain, and if he wins, they will continue to cash in while our families and our economy suffer and our future is put in jeopardy.

"That's the choice we face in this election. We can choose four years more of the same failed policies that have gotten us where we are. Four years more of oil companies calling the shots while hard working families are struggling. That's what Senator McCain is offering."
